On the 25th ultimo Company were verbally informed that only if they were prepared to accept any compromise which was considered reasonable by you would His Majesty's Government continue to support them.
They informed me that a telegraphic reply has now been sent to their agent, Major Nathan. This reply, they affirm, amounts to an acceptance en bloc of the terms arranged with Sir W. Hillier, acting on behalf of the Chinese Government.
I should be glad to know whether it is now possible on these lines to reach a settlement.
